DroneAirspace Privacy Policy

Last updated: 14 September 2026

DroneAirspace is a Burger Labs flight-planning and situational-awareness app for South African drone pilots. It is decision support. It does not grant permission, clearance or regulatory approval to fly.

What DroneAirspace is

DroneAirspace helps South African drone pilots review airspace, weather, terrain and planning information for a location they select. You can plan by tapping the map, searching, entering coordinates, or — if you allow it — using device location to centre the map.

DroneAirspace is available on iOS. An Android version is currently in development. Data practices are similar; map and billing details differ by platform, as described below.

Location

Location is optional and used while you use the app, not for advertising. DroneAirspace does not include a background-location mode for tracking flights. Weather, terrain and aviation analysis use the planning point you tap, search or enter — not a GPS trail uploaded to Burger Labs.

iOS

Location access is When In Use. The app requests a location fix when you use My Location so it can centre the map. Device GPS does not set or replace the planning pin. You can plan without GPS by tapping the map, searching or entering coordinates.

Android

The Android version currently in development does not ask for location at first launch. If you tap My Location and allow access, it may keep updating your position on the map while you use the app so the map can stay centred. That still does not set or replace the planning pin.

What stays on your device

Depending on the features you use, DroneAirspace may store on the device:

  • Saved flight sites and planning preferences;
  • Imported overlay files you choose to import;
  • Official ATNS datasets downloaded into the app;
  • Short-lived weather, space-weather and terrain caches;
  • Cached map tiles;
  • Unit and weather-limit preferences, where those features exist.

This information stays on the device unless you export or share it yourself, for example through the system share sheet.

What may leave the device

Depending on the features you use, the app may send network requests to operate planning features. Burger Labs does not operate a DroneAirspace account, and these requests are not described as uploading a GPS trail to Burger Labs.

  • Planning coordinates to Open-Meteo for weather forecasts and terrain elevation estimates;
  • Requests to NOAA SWPC for a global planetary K-index (space weather) feed — this feed is not a request that includes your location;
  • Requests to ATNS to check for and download official South African airspace data archives;
  • Map tile and place-search requests, which differ by platform.

Third-party services

These services operate when the related feature is used. They are not advertising networks.

Open-Meteo

Used for weather model data and terrain elevation. The app sends the planning point, and for terrain a set of nearby sample coordinates. See Open-Meteo terms.

ATNS

Official RSA airspace archives are retrieved from Air Traffic and Navigation Services when available, so the app can show published aviation structure. This is a dataset download for planning, not a live tracking feed to Burger Labs.

NOAA SWPC

Used for planetary K-index information from a public NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center product. See NOAA privacy information.

Apple (iOS)

Maps and place search use Apple MapKit / Apple Maps. Map tiles and search queries may be sent to Apple when you use those features. App Store purchases, where offered, are processed by Apple. See Apple’s Privacy Policy.

OpenFreeMap / OpenStreetMap (Android)

The Android basemap uses MapLibre with an OpenFreeMap Positron style derived from OpenStreetMap / OpenMapTiles data. Loading the map requests that style and map tiles for the area you are viewing. Ordinary network information such as IP address is part of those HTTPS requests. The app does not add your planning pin or GPS position to tile URLs in its own code. See OpenFreeMap and OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy information.

Android place search

Place-name search uses the Android platform Geocoder. On Google Play devices this is typically backed by Google services. Place-name queries leave the device when you search. They do not change aviation risk results.

Accounts, subscriptions and analytics

No Burger Labs account is required.

iOS

DroneAirspace Pro is an optional auto-renewing subscription purchased through Apple’s App Store. Apple processes payment. Burger Labs does not receive your payment card details. Subscription status is verified on the device using StoreKit.

Android

The Android version currently in development does not include Google Play Billing or a Burger Labs subscription. Feature availability on Android may therefore differ from iOS Pro.

DroneAirspace does not include third-party advertising or analytics SDKs, and it does not track you across other companies’ apps or websites for advertising.

Platform-specific information

Use this page for the App Store listing and, when released, the Google Play listing. The iOS app is for iPhone and iPad. The main differences between iOS and the Android version in development are:

  • Maps: Apple MapKit on iOS; MapLibre and OpenFreeMap on Android;
  • Place search: Apple on iOS; Android Geocoder (typically Google-backed on Play devices) on Android;
  • Subscriptions: Apple In-App Purchase on iOS; not included in the Android version currently in development;
  • Location: optional, used to centre the map while the app is in use; analysis uses the planning pin. iOS requests a fix when you use My Location. Android may keep the map marker updated after you allow access.

Support and privacy questions

If you email Burger Labs, we receive the address, message and any screenshots or diagnostic details you choose to send. Saved flight sites remain on your device unless you choose to share them.
